Network Operators
Learn about the major satellite communication networks
Four networks powering global satellite communications
Iridium, Inmarsat, Thuraya, and Globalstar each operate unique satellite constellations providing voice and data services across the globe. Explore their networks, infrastructure, and coverage capabilities.
Globalstar
Low-Earth orbit constellation with 48 satellites providing coverage across Americas, Europe, and select regions.
Inmarsat
Geostationary satellite network with 14 satellites delivering reliable global coverage for maritime and land users.
Iridium
True pole-to-pole coverage with 66 satellites in low-Earth orbit. The only network providing 100% global coverage.
Thuraya
Regional geostationary network with 2 powerful satellites covering Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Understanding satellite network types
LEO Networks
Low-Earth orbit satellites at 500-1,200 km altitude. Lower latency, requires more satellites for coverage. Used by Iridium and Globalstar.
GEO Networks
Geostationary satellites at 35,786 km altitude. Stationary relative to Earth, fewer satellites needed. Used by Inmarsat and Thuraya.
